What a PC that won't power on is usually telling you
A dead desktop feels final, but it rarely is — and the symptoms narrow it down before the case is even open.
Completely dead — no lights, no fans: almost always power. It might be as simple as the wall socket, the kettle lead or the switch on the back of the power supply; if those check out, the power supply itself is the usual suspect, and it's one of the cheapest parts in the machine to replace.
Fans spin but nothing on screen: the PC has power but isn't completing its startup checks. Loose RAM after a house move, a failing graphics card or a motherboard fault are the common causes — this one is worth a free diagnosis rather than guesswork, because the fix ranges from reseating a part to replacing one.
Starts, then shuts off after a few seconds: usually a protection circuit doing its job — overheating from a failed fan or dried thermal paste, or a power supply that can no longer hold its output under load.
Powers on, but Windows never appears: typically the storage drive or a corrupted Windows installation. Where the drive itself is healthy, we can transfer your files to a replacement drive before any repair work starts.
Whatever the symptom, don't keep switching it on and off hoping — repeated power cycling only makes a drive fault worse. Bring it in and we'll diagnose it free.
Industrial and embedded systems
The computer inside a production machine is a different job from a home desktop — panel PCs, embedded controllers and systems running legacy Windows get their own page: industrial computer repair in Nottingham.

Frequently asked questions
Can you fix a PC that won't turn on?
Yes — no-power and no-boot faults are among the most common jobs we see. It's usually the PSU, motherboard or a failed drive, and because we keep all of those in stock, most no-boot PCs are diagnosed free and repaired the same day.
Do you remove viruses?
Yes. We remove viruses, malware and ransomware properly — not just a quick scan — then patch Windows, secure your browser and set up sensible protection so it doesn't come straight back. Your files are preserved throughout.
Can you upgrade my PC instead of replacing it?
Often, yes — an SSD, extra RAM or a newer graphics card can transform an older machine for a fraction of replacement cost. We'll tell you honestly whether an upgrade is worth it for your specific PC before you spend anything.
Do you build custom PCs?
Yes — gaming PCs, home and office desktops and workstations, built to your spec and budget in our Nottingham workshop, stress-tested before handover. Tell us what it's for and we'll recommend a spec and fixed quote.
How much does PC repair cost?
PC repairs start from £30 including VAT. Diagnosis is free and you approve a fixed quote before any work starts — and if we can't fix it, you pay nothing.
My PC won't boot — can I get my files back?
Usually, yes. If the drive itself is healthy and the fault is elsewhere — power supply, motherboard, Windows — we can transfer your files to a replacement drive or a new machine before any repair work starts. If the drive itself has failed, recovery is a different job with no guaranteed outcome; we'll tell you honestly what we think the chances are before you commit to anything.
Do you repair all-in-one PCs?
Yes — all-in-ones from HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and others, including screen, drive and power faults. They take more careful disassembly than a tower, but the free diagnosis and fixed quote work exactly the same way.
Not worth repairing?
If the numbers don't stack up, we'll tell you straight — and every machine in our shop is refurbished on the same bench, tested, wiped and warrantied.
