Is It Worth Repairing an Old Laptop? The Honest Answer

By the TechRepairHub workshop team · July 9, 2026

You’d expect a repair shop to say “always repair.” We won’t — because telling people to repair machines that aren’t worth repairing is how a repair shop loses its reputation. Here’s the framework we actually use at the bench when a customer asks us this question.

The 50% rule (our starting point)

If the repair costs more than about half of what a comparable replacement would cost, replacement usually wins. The key word is comparable: compare against a machine of similar class — which is often a refurbished business laptop, not a brand-new one. A £90 screen on a laptop you could replace like-for-like for £500 is clearly worth doing. A £200 motherboard repair on a machine worth £250 usually isn’t.

Repairs that are almost always worth it

Batteries, screens, keyboards, hinges, charging ports, and — the big one — an SSD upgrade. If your laptop is slow but otherwise healthy, swapping an old hard drive for an SSD and adding RAM transforms it for a fraction of replacement cost. It’s the single best-value repair we do, and it’s why “my laptop is slow” should never automatically mean “I need a new laptop.”

Repairs that need a harder look

Motherboard faults, serious liquid damage, and GPU failures sit at the expensive end. Sometimes they’re still worth it — a two-year-old high-spec machine, yes; an eight-year-old budget one, no. This is exactly what a free diagnosis is for: know the real number before deciding, rather than guessing.

The age question

Age matters less than class. A five-year-old business-grade laptop with a fresh battery and SSD will outperform and outlast a two-year-old budget machine. What does count against very old machines is software support: if the laptop can’t run a currently supported version of Windows, security alone starts to argue for replacement.

Don’t forget what’s ON the laptop

Even when a laptop isn’t worth repairing, the data usually is. Photos, documents and business records can almost always be recovered from a dead machine and transferred to the next one — so “it won’t turn on” doesn’t mean your files are gone. Get in touch before writing anything off.
